Pausing to honor life and inspire hope

Shining light on a tragic day

Dozens in the Rowan University community gathered at the end of a beautiful September day to pay tribute to the 2,977 victims of the 9/11 attacks. Students and staff lit one candle for each victim lost, including the final 411 candles in honor of the first responders who perished trying to save others. Two Rowan alumni died at Two World Trade Center: Daphne Pouletsos '76 and Lance Tumulty '92. As their alma mater family, it is fitting that we honor their memory.

President Houshmand encouraged unity and noted that the design and construction of the memorial was led by students. Glassboro pastor Todd Foster said September 11 was a defining moment in people's lives, including those, like many Rowan students, who were not yet born in 2001.

The candles glowed in the late summer stillness until midnight, the start of a new day.
