Shielded by head-to-toe PPE and with just a minute or two to speak while the car window is down, nurses try to offer a bit of car-side manner by writing their names on their PPE. They lean toward each vehicle to gather information and collect a specimen from residents whose symptoms may be the first sign of infection with COVID-19.

Gloucester County residents’ vehicles have become their personal waiting rooms at the county’s drive-thru COVID-19 testing site at Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester. In the last month, hundreds sought the tests provided by Rowan Medicine and Gloucester County public health professionals.

“We’re here to keep our patients and our providers safe,” said Scott Woodside, director for the Rowan University Wellness Center. “We are sensitive to our patients’ anxiety. We know we could be patients one day, so we are collecting specimens with as much compassion and efficiency as possible.”

Serving Gloucester County together

The site is a partnership of Rowan University; Rowan Medicine; Happy Healthy You Medical Practice; Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Department of Health, Sheriff’s Office, and Public Works; Rowan College of South Jersey – Gloucester; Lab Corp; Quest Labs; Deptford Police Department; and Gloucester County Medical Reserve Corps.

Getting tested

Residents who test positive receive a call from the health care provider who referred the patient to be tested. Those who test negative receive an email from the provider. Lab results are available within one to four days. The Gloucester County Department of Health and Human Services and Office of Emergency Management have announced more than 700 positive COVID-19 cases in Gloucester County, but the overall threat of COVID-19 to county residents remains low.

At least into early May, the county site will provide from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays for Gloucester County residents who are at least 18 years old and who have been prescreened for potential COVID-19 infection. More information is available at gloucestercountynj.gov.

The Rowan Medicine team is working with Gloucester County agencies, including the Medical Reserve Corps at the testing site at Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester.
