From measuring zooplankton and cyanobacteria to detecting anomalies from flight data to exploring the impact of the mind and body, 170 Rowan University students joined College of Science & Mathematics professors to take part in a unique undergraduate research initiative (PHOTO GALLERY BELOW).
The 10-week program provides hands-on experiences outside of the classroom, fosters students’ critical thinking and technical skills, offers mentoring and volunteer activities and opens doors to the wider scientific community through co-authored articles for major peer-reviewed journals and presentation of research outcomes at conferences.
The students shared their findings at a poster symposium at the end of the 10-week program.
“Our COURI projects are advancing science in many fields,” said Dr. Kristy Shuda McGuire, assistant dean and COURI director. “They also provide exceptional opportunities for our students. In the sciences and related fields, research experience is critical to acceptance into master’s and doctoral degree programs, and it provides entry into first post-college jobs.”
While the Summer Research Symposium concluded on July 25, at least 500 students are expected to conduct research during the 2019-20 academic year.
