Joy Solomen '69, M'75, received the 2019 Alumni Ambassador Award for her dedication and service to Rowan University and the surrounding community.
As a Glassboro State College undergraduate, Solomen was a three-sport varsity athlete and captain in field hockey, lacrosse and basketball. She was the first woman inducted in the Rowan-Glassboro State Athletics Hall of Fame—which was later named in her honor.
Solomen began her career at Glassboro State College in 1986 as the director of women’s athletics. Under her leadership, Rowan Athletics reached national prestige, securing a spot among the top 25 athletic programs in Division III. After more than 25 years as director of Athletics, Solomen retired in 2012.
In addition to the strong foundation she laid for the Athletics Department, Solomen’s legacy at Rowan includes starting the women’s golf outing for alumni, establishing the Athletic Director Award for Academic Excellence, and sponsoring two medallion awards in honor of her former professors and coaches, Dr. Mary A. Rice and Dr. Shirley O’Day. She also established the Joy Solomen Scholarship, which supports Rowan Health & Exercise Science students.
